Ideas & inspiration for Day trips

Fascinating Fulda

Fulda is known as Hesse’s most picturesque baroque city. It is located in the heart of Germany, making it a perfect destination for a day trip. During a visit to the town, you can discover the magnificent buildings in the baroque quarter, take in the imposing Cathedral and visit St Michael’s Church, which dates back to the 9th century. Not to forget the charming Residence, complete with a newly renovated tower. We can arrange a lunch booking for your tour group. After a lovely lunch, you can spend the afternoon exploring the old town’s historical alleys and its lovingly restored timber-framed houses.

Musical Summer in Fulda

In summer, the centre of the baroque cathedral city becomes a Mecca for fans of musicals from all over Germany. Groups of over 20 people can enjoy great discounts on their tickets.

From 31st May to 28th July 2024, the renovated Schlosstheater will host performances of ”Pope Joan”. The evening performances (Wed-Sat) start at 7.30pm. There are additional matinee performances at 2.30pm on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The performances of “Boniface – The Musical” from 22nd August to 31st August 2024 provide an impressive open-airexperience against the backdrop of the Cathedral. Enjoy a three-course meal before the 8.30pm performance at the “Bonifatius Restaurant” in the Orangerie’s magnificent ballroom. Alternatively, the Genussmeile along the Pauluspromenade, featuring stalls selling delicious food and drink, offers a range of treats. For those interested, the musical group "spotlight" provides a peak behind the scenes with a one-hour guided tour in the afternoon (final tour at 4pm).

Delightful Fulda

We start with a journey through the culinary world of Fulda. In addition to typical local specialties and drinks, you will also get to know the fascinating baroque city with its rich history. Our tour begins in the baroque quarter and encompasses a variety of highlights in the old town. You will enjoy 6 delicious samples as part of the tour.

The weekly market is open until 1pm every Wednesday and Saturday, and the farmers’ market is held until 1.30pm on Thursdays – full of specialities from the local region.

From 7th to 11th August 2024, Fulda’s Food & Drink Festival (Wednesday to Saturday from 5pm, Sunday from midday to 7pm) invites you to enjoy selected culinary delights, fine wines and culinary artisanry in the Residence courtyard under the beautifully illuminated “Magic Sky”.

Fulda’s Wine Festival will take place from 28th August to 31st August and from 4th September to 7th September 2024, held in the wonderful setting of the Vonderau Museum’s courtyard. It opens at 5pm and promises to be a real treat for fans of both wine and music.

A wine tour to Fulda

Even though Fulda is no longer known as a traditional wine-growing region, back in the 12th century, wine was grown on the sunny limestone slopes around the town. These days, Fulda’s only vineyard lies on the southern slope of the Franciscan Frauenberg monastery. This well-tended vineyard, looked after by the Weinhistorischen Konvent Fulda e.V., is home to around 750 vines of different varieties and is the first stop on your wine tour of Fulda. Enjoy wonderful views of the city from the Flora Klostercafé terrace, while you fortify yourself with some lunch or enjoy a selection of Fulda’s culinary delights.

During the tour of the old town and the baroque quarter, you will discover Fulda’s traditional connection to wine, all the while accompanied by a rolling wine barrel. In addition to entertaining anecdotes and “tales of Fulda’s wine”, you will sample four select white wines during the 1.5-hour tour. And don't forget to take a selfie with the Spätlesereiter monument in the Residence courtyard.

Fulda’s green oases

The city hosted the Hessian State Garden Show for the second time in 2023 and is home to a variety of parks, as well as hidden ornamental and monastery gardens. During the guided tour and walk, you will discover the baroque town’s many architectural highlights and a number of its gardens. The redesigned Residence Gardens are expected to reopen from autumn 2024. The rest of the time is free for you to explore Fulda on your own.

Alternatively, take a trip to Schloss Fasanerie near Eichenzell. These gardens are the venue for the biannual “Princely Garden Festivals”, which take place from 17th to 20th May and from 30th August to 1st September 2024. Alternatively, you can book a guided tour of the park and then enjoy coffee and cake in the castle café.

The guided tour through the 2,000m² monastery garden of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Mary in Fulda is a real highlight. It is only open on Saturdays between May and September and is led by a nun.

Sargenzell “Früchteteppich” & Fulda

Every year since 1988, a huge carpet of natural fruit and flowers has been created for the Harvest Festival in the old church of the Hünfeld district of Sargenzell, about 15km north of Fulda. The arrangement changes every year and can be admired until the beginning of November. The beautiful autumnal baroque town of Fulda invites you to take a stroll afterwards. If you want to eat out in the evening, you can choose from a variety of restaurants.

A stroll through Fulda & the Rhön Sausage Market

Fulda is not just a baroque city, it is also known for its great range of shops. Whether you're looking for an exclusive boutique, a small gift shop or a large fashion chain – you’ll find everything your heart desires here. “Fuldaer Lilien”, which means “Fulda lilies”, are just one example. They are a sweet pastry and a popular souvenir from the Tourist Information Office. Combine your stroll through the city with a guided tour of the most beautiful squares, imposing churches, the historic old town and the unique baroque quarter.

The Rhön Sausage Market or “Wurstmarkt” takes place every other year in October. From 12th to 13th October 2024, around 50 butchers and farm sellers will be presenting their speciality sausages and related products on Marktstraße in the climatic health resort of Ostheim vor der Rhön. Here you can feast to your heart’s content and sample the delicacies of the region.

Fulda & Kloster Kreuzberg

Head out on a guided walking tour of the baroque city of Fulda and explore the most important sights. Options include visiting the inside of the Cathedral and St. Michael's Church, as well as entertaining tours by guides in costume. This is followed by a tour of the brewery with beer tasting and a rustic lunch in the Braustube. Finally, round off your day with a trip to the Franciscan monastery at Kreuzberg. The monastery and its Franciscan monks have been treating pilgrims and hikers to hearty meals and their famous Kreuzberg beer since 1731.

Fulda’s Christmas Market

From 29th November to 23rd December 2024, Fulda will be transformed into a dreamlike Christmas town with a traditional market, magical huts, a market selling regional delicacies, a medieval Christmas village and a spectacularly illuminated winter forest. Immerse yourself in the festive atmosphere in the midst of the historical surroundings and enjoy the magic of the Christmas season. The festively decorated stalls invite you to sample the wide range of culinary delights on offer.

Combine your visit to the Christmas market with a guided tour of the city or cathedral. Fulda Cathedral, the city’s landmark, was built in the 18th century in line with plans drawn up by baroque master builder Johann Dientzenhofer. It is the cathedral church of the diocese of Fulda. As the burial church of Saint Boniface, the “German apostle”, it has a special religious significance and is at the heart of Fulda’s baroque quarter.

If you wish, you can round off your day trip with a horse-drawn ride in the Rhön. Look forward to an unforgettable experience

Winter Varieté show in Fulda
